Visual Computing: I find learning the guts of art programs really tedious and not that fun, but I suppose it is a necessary evil if I ever want a job.
Drawing: I really like the instructor and the models/objects we've been drawing so far; I'm trying to break bad habits in the way I see/draw (esp. underestimating negative space/spacial relations of objects in general) and he's has said so helpful things to me so far during model drawing, but I do find our group crits waaaay too positive (more other students fault, maybe it will get better?).
Painting: Another good instructor, it makes me feel like a ~~real artist~~, learning how to stretch canvases and oil paint and all that. And honestly I've enjoyed the feel of the oils and the nice acrylics so far, I'm liking opaque pants much more than when I used really shitty ones (surprise!)
Drawing on Location: Yet another instructor I'm enjoying, so far we've been going different places and drawing architecture, which is a challenge for me because I don't have that much experience with it but I think I'm really improving. The class makes me a little nervous because everyone else is a 2nd or 3rd year but I'm keeping up.
Survey of World Art: I supposedly switched out of the worst teacher ever, my new class seems okay, I really like the textbook because it goes more in-depth into non-western art and is written by a woman, which is interesting because the fine arts/art history have historically been super male dominated--I want to see how different her perspective will be from Janson's. But no one discusses anything in class, which sucks.
Though I've been bracing myself for that because SVA has low academic standards for applicants (most art schools do) and it kinda shows, especially after going through the IB program at an college-prep school. I kinda miss class discussions even if I thought most of classmates were full of hot air, better than the constant pop culture vomit I've been subjected to so far. I have the feeling I'm going to be an odd duck in the cartooning department because I care tons more about things like art history, anthropology and literature and how to apply it to my work than the newest movie adaption of a comic and drawing fan art for it. But according to our department head that means I'll get a job so oh well.
Speaking of jobs, I got paid for storyboarding and by the end of the month I should know what gov't work study position I'm going to have.
Feels weird, being an adult that has to budget her time between school and work and track her money obsessively and buy groceries and cook and clean and stuff and be responsible...while going to fucking comic book school
