Description
MIXED MEDIA EXPLOSIOOOOON.
Baku itself: watercolours (horribly washed out by scanner) watercolour pencils, 8B pencil.
"Dreams": India ink, applied with a G-nib
Head: Oil-pastel/Cray-pas whateverthefuck, nibs-applied ink
Background: Acrylic paint--Payne's Gray, which is the weirdest colour ever.
For the non-folklore-dorks in the audience: the Baku is a type of monster from Japan that has it orgins in China. It is a chimerical creature, with a bear's body, rhinoceros-eyes, tiger-legs, a cow's tail, the trunk of an elephant and a spotted coat. The Baku is benevolent and can ward off evil, but its best-known ability is to consume bad dreams and the evil fortunes they bring. Next time you are having a nightmare, feel free to call on a Baku for help.
My rendering of the Baku probably owes something to Yoshitaka Amano's depiction of them in The Dream Hunters by Neil Gaiman.
